Piano Donation

We are so lucky to have recently had a piano donated to us by a resident and their family. It looks lovely in the lounge and we hope that the residents and friends and families of Valerie Manor will soon be enjoying playing and listening to others play the piano. It gives a real family feel – I remember standing around our piano at home singing along as our neighbour played good old fashioned tunes!

I reached grade 5 in piano but that was when I was very young… a resident also used to play and I have suggested that we both try to play again together! We will see if it all comes flooding back to us both!

Thank you again for the kind donation.

Welcome Kirsty

A big welcome to Kirsty who has just joined the team at Valerie Manor as a new Hospitality Assistant. Kirsty has been working alongside Martyn in the kitchen and around Valerie Manor helping serve refreshments to the residents. She is so keen and enthusiastic which is so lovely to see. The residents and staff have already warmed to her as she always has a smile on her face. Here’s a little bit about her…

“Hello, my name is Kirsty and I go to Brinsbury College studying Animal Care. I love my pets and have a little dog. I enjoy taking her out on nature walks”.

Tea Party at St Peters Church

Our local Community are just so kind – St Peters Church have a monthly tea party which the residents have been invited to each month. Unfortunately our office manager Alan was not able to take the residents this week, but Mary from St Peters and her friends came to the rescue and kindly came to pick up 7 of our residents and 3 staff to enjoy the afternoon with the local community. It was lovely to have home-made cakes and biscuits and enjoy the company of others. The residents thoroughly enjoyed a walk around the Church as well.

Thank you so much to Mary and the local community for making it another special afternoon for the residents of Valerie Manor.

Zumba!

We are so lucky to have Clare Osbourne come to offer her services and provide a Zumba Gold class for the residents. Zumba Gold takes the popular Latin-dance inspired workout of Zumba and makes it accessible for seniors. The residents were not sure what to expect as it is quite a new concept for them but as you can see from their faces (and of course the faces of the staff!) they thoroughly enjoyed the session and are looking forward to further classes.

Thank you Clare for giving up your time for the residents at Valerie Manor and for providing us all with a new exciting experience …. and keeping us fit and healthy!

Valerie Manor Raising Money for St Barnabas

Recently staff suggested that we have a year of fund raising for St Barnabas House, which I wholeheartedly support. Since we are currently part of the Gold Standards Framework and are working with staff, residents and their families and GP’s to ensure that end of life care at Valerie Manor is of a very high standard, we thought that this would be a great way of thanking St Barnabas for their support that they give to everyone here at Valerie Manor, as well as the help they give to others.

Care assistants Collette and Sarah started the idea as they wanted to take part in this year’s Night to Remember half marathon midnight walk along Worthing seafront and were keen to do this while representing Valerie Manor. We were all 100% behind the idea and this has now paved the way for future events throughout the year and into 2013. The list of events that we currently have planned are as follows;

Night to Remember Midnight Walk
Saturday 16th June 2012
Care assistants Collette and Sarah join around 1,000 other fabulous women walkers to take part in the 5th year of this fantastic event.

Go Green Tea Party
Friday 12th October 2012
This was a popular event a couple of years ago at Valerie Manor. Join us for an afternoon of fun, food and entertainment where the staff will be dressed in green for the day!

Brighton Marathon
Sunday 14th April 2013
Registered Nurse Linda Norman and Office Manager Alan Fry have bravely put themselves forward for next year’s Brighton marathon. Good luck to both of you! ……..I wonder who will get the fastest time?!

We hope to add more events over time so please check back regularly for updates and news.

I think it’s fantastic that we have staff with such big hearts and are so dedicated to what they do and what they believe in. I’m very proud of them all.

A Very Spoilt Office Manager!

I had a lovely surprise this afternoon, when a resident’s relation asked me to come into the conservatory as they had something for me, I opened the gift bag in front of the residents and found a beautifully knitted bobble hat. I had previously joked that during the colder weather, because of my lack of hair I did notice the cold!

I must thank both Dree and Joy (pictured) for taking the trouble, and whilst they said it was just a joke – it was very much appreciated. The ladies also wrote a rhyme which they are happy for me to share with you!

Joy said to me, a hat you did need
So out came my needles with great speed!
This little hat I’ve made for you
It will stop your head from turning blue!
I hope to your face it will bring a smile,
Then all of my work will have been worthwhile
Joy’s done her best to write this rhyme
Forgive the poor soul – she’s nearly 89!

Good Luck Lucy

It was Lucy’s last shift over the weekend before commencing her maternity leave, and so to wish her well we gathered in the conservatory on Friday, where the residents presented her with a blanket they had knitted. Lucy was so pleased with the blanket and promised to visit with her new arrival very soon!

Welcome Philile

Philile has recently joined our Care Team as a Registered Nurse, as usual all her new colleagues extend a warm welcome to her.

“My name is Philile, and I enjoy walking and playing netball. I am very much looking forward to working in this small and warm environment.”

Residents’ Meeting – 27th April 2012

We held our April Residents’ meeting on Friday 27th, which again was very well attended. The meetings are always started with a glass of sherry! It’s nice to get everyone together and to hear ideas and opinions.

This month’s subjects included; an update on the new garden design for the grounds in front of the car park, new additions to our activities programme and the announcement of our Jubilee celebrations. We also discussed the menus and ask for any requests to be included in menu planning going forward. There was also an update on the increase in staff to cater for the laundry and housekeeping.

We also announced the exciting news that we would be supporting St Barnabas Hospice in Worthing, by donating all funds raised through charitable events held at Valerie Manor and other events that staff take part in for the next year. We’ll have more details on this and other items from our meeting on our blog very soon.

Welcome Nicki

“Hi my name is Nicki and I have just joined ‘the bank’ at Valerie Manor. I have been a qualified nurse for 19 years and spent my early career working in hospitals, but the last 11 years as part of the local district nursing team.

I live in Upper Beeding, which I love!, with my husband and baby daughter.

When I have time I love to bake and get digging on my allotment – any advice gratefully received!”

- I am sure Nicki will be a great asset to our fabulous Care Team, and everyone at Valerie Manor welcomes her aboard!
